Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, a prime Uganda safaris destination, is located in southwestern Uganda, with thick forest vegetation like its name suggests. It is the true African jungle with droplets of the sun coming through the thick forest cover giving you a feeling of being in paradise with zero pollution from several emissions common to our daily environment.
The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994 because of its rich diversity in hosting different flora and fauna and being home to half of the worlds’ remaining population mountain gorillas and also being the only habitant where the two great apes live together harmoniously (Chimps and Mountain gorillas). The park covers an area of 321 km2, amidst a sea heavy populated community land whereby poaching is among the threats affecting gorilla population
Bwindi Development Network is the first local led, Community Based Organization in Buhoma- Bwindi, Uganda creating the first Bwindi Reformed Poacher Centre with the goal of zero poaching and improved livelihoods of reformed poachers and other community members.
Equipping the young generation with history of what old used to do in the forest which helps the young people to understand the impact of poaching and conservation.
Bwindi Reformed Poacher Centre provides the following alternative activities
- Lecture about gorilla conservation and engagement of communities in conservation and development activities
- Historical knowledge and tour the following sites;
- Snare/traps store
- Different snare/traps in action, the experience to be provided by reformed poachers
- Batwa (pygmies) ‘resident and basic family activities in action during your visit
- Platform site with great view of Bwindi Forest and the surrounding communities
- Batwa School or Batwa entertainment
- Read and learn about different animal species in Uganda
